Hello everyone, my name is Alyssa
Rodriguez. My preferred pronouns are she, her, hers. I am a fourth-year history
major with a minor in Chicana/o/x studies. My focus in my studies here at UCLA havebeen
Mexican/Latin American history and culture so I try to take as many classes
surrounding the topics as I can. I currently am not conducting research, but my
hopes are that I can in graduate school sometime in the near future. I have not
completely narrowed down a specific topic, but I know that it will be on something
having to do with Tejano culture. Growing up in Texas I never really understood
the culture I was apart of until I moved to California and realized the vast differences,
especially in food. Since then I have been very interested and it is my hope to one day
work for the institute of Texan cultures in San Antonio.
The readings from this week were
interesting. The essays, “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” and “Conditions
for Producing Chicana Art” both touched on the art created by women. It
highlighted the intersectionality of women, especially Chicanas and how they have
greater obstacles than white women or even minority males. In the reading by Nochlin,
the writer discusses the privilege to have the means to create art and have it
recognized. I think it is good to discuss the lack of equality that women have
in society and how inequality is produced on different levels. If the
discussion around unequal opportunities for Chicanas is brought to society’s
attention then perhaps it can elicit change.
(This is the only picture I have taken of myself in almost 4 months.)
