Susan R. Mogul, Tableaux Vivant series, 1978

Leading Chicano artist, Yolanda M. Lopez, has many famous works of art over the years.  I figured that most other students will use some of those more famous works to write up.  The picture I chose to write about today is titled Susan R. Mogul, from the Tableaux Vivant series from 1978.  I also chose to write about this image in my short paper as well.  However, since it is one of my favorites, I will expand my thoughts on it here.  This image, like those from the Guadalupe series, makes use of the Virgen de Guadalupe backdrop.  Not only the backdrop, but the entire essence of the Virgen de Guadalupe is used to create this powerful piece.  Only this is a photograph series and the focus of the shot is a real live person.  There are several in this series, but the one that stood out the most to me, is this medium shot of Susan Mogul, with pink flowers held against her chest and a smile that is as radiant as the white and gold mandorla that frames the picture.  In other photos from this series the model is wearing athletic clothes and moving forward.  With all of this, the artist is suggesting that she, nor women in general, will not be stuck up on a pedestal.  This is another statement by the artist that woman are capable of more.
