Torres, Whisper

My name is Whisper Torres. My pronouns are she/her/hers. I am 19 years old, a second year Psychology major, possibly double majoring with Chicano/a/x and Central American Studies with a minor in Global Studies. I am from Deep East Oakland. Ever since I can remember I was always actively looking for a way to be connected to my culture or to service my community. I joined danza when I was a sophomore in high school, this has been a critical part of my spirituality and identity as a Xicana. I think I fully became a Xicana, was when I became a sauhmadora. To me Xicanismo is a promise to your community to continuously fight for your people and for the redistribution of resources. I also believe there is a political consciousness paired with spirituality and self acceptance. Through years of colonialism the biggest obstacle we face is overcoming the self doubt and rejection that has been instilled in us for so long. Within the danza space I was able to grow out of my shell, but this was the first time I was exposed to different kinds of art. I have seen trajes sewn and painted overnight, and giant boards with drawings created out of flowers, beans and rice for the center of altars. Joining this class I want to learn about more artists and learn how to support them. Even though I have been apart of these spaces I have also never challenged myself to try to do more creative projects. One of my intentions for this class is to learn to use art as a form of self reflection and a reminder that I am also an artist in my own way. I am really excited to see where this class can take me and how I can share what I learn here.
