Hello everyone, my name is Flor Uribe and my preferred pronouns are she, her, hers. I am a third year Economics major and a Chicana and Chicano Studies minor. I have considered double majoring in Chicana/o Studies, but have yet to come to a decision about that. I am not involved in any research programs nor do I know if that is something I would like to pursue. I am not an artist; however, I am excited to try and see what I can create as I have never really seen myself as the creative type. I am also excited to find out more about Chicana artists and hope to expand my knowledge on that topic.
One of the readings that really caught my attention was "Our Lady of Controversy" by Professor Lopez. I would have never imagined that La Virgen de Guadalupe was a coded image that the indigenous community created to act as a symbol of resistance and in order to stop their suffering at the hands of the Spaniards. Furthermore, as Professor Lopez does, I too question who the original image of La Virgen could have been made by. I am fascinated by the idea that La Virgen could have originated with this political purpose. Personally, I am not religious but seeing La Virgen portrayed in contemporary ways by Chicana artists, who have different meanings and stories to add to her image makes me more interested in learning more about how people see her, as well as finding out more about Chicana artists.
