Week 4: Rasquachismo and Domestica

According to Chicano and Chicana Art: A Critical Anthology, Rasquachismo and Domestica can be more easily understood as notions that exist within the circle of Chicano/a Arts community, as they are a direct response to the common mixture of heritage and culture that is shared between the broad diaspora that is collectively known as the Chicano/a community.

Rasquachismo is used more to describe the common set of attitudes that is usually present in Chicano/a Arts when regarding the stereotypical notion of the working class male Chicano. It is outright dismissive and possibly even argumentative against the very idea of what is commonly perceived as the culture of the higher class. In its core essence, Rasquachismo is a word used to describe a general attitude of lower class Chicanos, which is in itself a rejection of the common ideal to become a part of the high class.

While Domestica can be initially perceived to be the equivalent attitude but shaped to fit Chicanas, it is important to note the element of feminism and the rejection of traditional gender roles instilled by the Latino community. Domestica is especially influenced by the unique Chicana experience in the adoption of feminist ideals as well as the conflict that can arise from those feminist ideals in the typical Chicana upbringing of Latino American culture which places an emphasis on the notion of machismo. Domestica also stresses the feminine style and sexuality of the Chicana heritage.

It is important to note that Rasquachismo and Domestica are both uniquely representative of working class traditional Chicano/a heritage, and are seen as a direct response to what is considered to be proper within the Chicano/a community.
