2020 Olsen, Eric: Week 4- Rasquachismo and Domesticana

Rasquachismo and domesticana are Chicana/o artistic responses to identity and society for and by members of the community. While the two attitudes both express multi-cultural, familial, and personal style, rasquachismo is dominated by men, while domesticana works as a feminist critique of Chicana art and culture.

Rasquachismo is a descriptor for the attitude of resourcefulness and adaptability innate to working class Chicano art. It dismisses upper class, upper crust notions of beauty, simplicity, and the ‘correct’ or ‘proper’ materials associated with making art. Domesticana is a facet of rasquachismo but is specific to feminist art and work that talks about the “home, the church, and the community.” Both works express Chicano pride and power, yet, domesticana works also comment and subvert patriarchy and gender roles in the community. Domesticana celebrates Chicana sexuality, style, and power.

Artists working in these artforms create distinct and unapologetic work about their communities and experiences in an explicitly self- guided way using bold and everyday materials. As a result, their work is honest and accessible and bold and can take the form of layered ofrendas, complicated installations, and colorful collections in yards and around the home.
