As the title says, my name is Michael Ybarra. I am a 3rd year transfer student here at UCLA. My major is Chicano/a studies. I am hoping to add a minor in accounting after this quarter as well, but I am still undecided about that. I transferred here from Mesa College in San Diego, where I have lived for the last 16 or so years. I grew up and graduated from high school in the small mountain town called Tehachapi. Most of my mom's side of the family lives in that area which is how we ended up there. Luckily my father's side of the family is mostly in San Diego and we lived in both places at different points of my life.
I put off attending college for many years after high school. In that time I worked full time and had two main careers. One in accounting and one in politics. Running campaigns at local and state levels was very exciting and incredibly fulfilling, when you win. However, accounting has always been the more secure profession and has been equally rewarding for me, even if it is never as exciting as a win on election night. I just moved up to Los Angeles with my 7 year old english bulldog. His name is Rafa, he smells, makes a mess, and can be quite a pain in the ass, but I still put up with it because I love him. We live with my cousin Artie which has made the transition to a new city much easier. I look forward to learning and working with you all in a subject that I have no background. I hope to spend most of my time here at UCLA taking classes on subjects that I do not know much about in order to expand my horizons and perhaps even find new interests.
