The photo taken by Lopez titled, "Las Santas Locas" was my favorite photograph that Lopez took for various reasons. For one, the photograph is black and white. The simple act of having a black and white photograph introduces additional toughness in these young Mexican American women. The black and white in the photograph really captures how independent these young women are. Moreover, because these young Mexican American women are in the photo together they represent unity. It represents the notion that if one Mexican American women resists than all resist any social or political forces that aim to oppress them. These young women are not smiling or showing a sensitive side. They seem to be prepared to battle any obstacles that try to overrun them.
I enjoyed this piece of artwork from Lopez because many Mexican American women grow up knowing at least what it was like to see or be a tomboy. Acting tough was, somewhat, part of growing up as a colored skin person in the United States. It captures the "all for one" concept. Also, the notion that Mexican American women will do what they desire to do and no one can tell them otherwise. For example, no one can tell them how to speak, look or be because if one woman falls, all women rise up as a family. Another reason why I liked this photograph very much is because it reminded me about they way that I grew up. As a chicana, I had to find my ways in a world that expected so much from me. I had to toughen up at a very young age and show the people around me that I don't people to construct or guide my life for me because I can do that on my own.
