Cover Image Stencil

I spent a long time thinking of just the perfect stencil to create and use on the cover of my sketchbook.  Should I pick something cool? Something more related to art? Some of the ideas that crossed my mind included a silhouette of my dog, Rafa. I have had him for almost eight years and he means a lot to me. He means enough to me that I am ok with the mess he creates that I have to clean up. Another idea that came up was the logo of FC Barcelona. Not only is it my favorite team, I am a member of the club and it is a topic that my brother and I spend much time talking about. Watching every match, discussing the outcomes, and future prospects is something that we both love to do. I felt this would hold a deeper meaning of family.

That thinking then lead me to my final choice. The one thing, or symbol that always leads my thoughts to those of my family. The UFW eagle logo. The UFW and the movement created by Cesar Chavez has meant so much to me and my family as a whole. Not only does this image mean a lot personally, but many thousands of people have similar feelings towards it. The image even shows up from time to time in Chicano artwork and murals. This image and the memories it holds for me, makes it perfect for the front of the sketchbook. Although, in order to make the stencil work, I may need to leave out the words and just include the eagle by itself.
