Week 3 Yolonda Lopez

I really enjoyed looking at this piece because I myself am a photographer. I like the movement in this photo and how happy the person in this photo looks to be participating with the photographer. so the energy in this photo is really nice. It is an art piece which I consider domesticana with rasquache ties but this photo challenges both the dominant gaze and rasquachismo even though it has borrowed elements of Rasquachismo it has its own unique design. Domesticana art has alters as a part of its movement and in this piece the person is a part of the altar and is also a woman who challenges the idea of what " La Virgen de Guadalupe" is supposed to look like. This art piece and the woman in the piece show the resistance and creativity of Domesticana. The traditional sense of what a woman is supposed to be is embodied within " La Virgen De Guadalupe" . This photo shows how she is producing an Art that is challenging the idea with shorts, a tank top and a fist in the air. This was a brave act because it challenged society and the church ! even the culture shared across Latinx culture who are catholic and or religious on christian context. This act was revolutionary and liberating for Latinx women to be seen like this. The powerful image of a saint or godly like image of “ la virgen'' was juxtaposed with the idea of  “ the ordinary person” the ordinary then becomes extraordinary and powerful as well. It sends the message to everyone about the freedom of self and expression when it comes to not only the art but the idea of the self. To see yourself reflected in an art is a beautiful thing and this art then speaks to many people in specific latinx woman. Lopez’s piece represented a lot through her symbolism but also through her smile in this photo which focused on the natural state and still be considered art.
