Art is perceived as an elitist world due to the barriers that white and upper-class artists and critiques put on people of color. An example is the lack of representation of Chicanx artists in known museums because it does not follow their "standards" of art. Chicanx artists and their work endures harsh critiques because of their style and expression. The white hegemonic power seen in the art world influences and maintains the concept of the correct way to do art. These "rules" and challenges disregards diversity and intersectionality in the art world. It is important to understand and accept all different kinds of art because it makes an impact on the Chicanx youth audience and Chicanx community as a whole.
Chicanx art has become a political statement and a resistant art movement against the majority. In the readings, it discusses two art forms found in the Chicanx community Rasquachismo and Domesticana. Raquaschismo from an outside perspective saw this art form as poor people’s art and was not considered as art at all. However, Raquachismo is a DIY and punk movement against the rules of art. It is an attitude and taste that the artists are trying to show in their art pieces. It is about an art piece that shows resilience and culture rejecting the whiteness found in the United States.
Domesticana art movement is led by Chicanas, another safe space for intersectionality. It is a movement to dismiss machismo in the art world. It was space to express feminimisn and represent Chicana artist. Chicana artists are following the DIY art forms to create a Chicanx narrative and navigate themselves against gender roles.
