Week 7 - Marion C. Martinez
Marion C. Martinez creates mixed tech media because her art involves using recycled circuit boards. Most of her art has some religious attachment in them but with the addition of the circuit board it adds a more modern feeling to the religious significance. This art piece is called Virgen de Guadalupe, a wall hanging completed in 2003. I chose this piece because the detail on this piece is amazing. The image of the Virgen de Guadalupe is used to describe a merciful mother who loves and protects everyone. Usually artist find their own representation of religious figures but in this case Martinez is able to do this while still keeping the merciful sensation. Her adaptation using the circuit boards gives it a more modern feel where the artist is not making a statement with the image but instead honoring her in a modernistic way. This is also an example of how she stays true to the cultural images she has seen growing up and incorporates the addition of more American modernism ideals.
