End of Course Reflection

This quarter has been a whirlwind, but this course has definitely been one of my highlights! I was really excited to take this class because of its art component. I used to make art in high school but stopped once I came to UCLA. I just did not have the motivation to create as consistently as I wanted to. When enrolling in classes throughout my time here, I always looked for classes that had creative components to them because although I didn’t make art, I loved to be creative. This class was the class I was missing for so long! It has pushed me to create art, not for art’s sake, but for my sake. It has kicked my creative gears into motion and has brought me joy--I didn’t realize how much I missed drawing. My favorite art assignment from this class was definitely the ASL alphabet where we had to draw our hands using various techniques. I know a lot of people dread drawing hands because they are difficult to draw, but I absolutely LOVE drawing hands! It was what I was known for in high school. I really enjoyed learning different ways of drawing, and allowing myself to not be so concerned with how technically “good” they looked.

On top of enjoying the art assignments, I really enjoyed the course content. I had heard of many of the artists we discussed in class but I never really got an in-depth view of their art and activism until this class. I really enjoyed reading the books on the individual Chicana artists from the Ver Series. I'm glad I purchased them because they're a great addition to my library! Thank you all for a great class and for the engaging discussions!
