I am an art enthusiast and appreciate every form of art done by people’s creativeness. The art world and history are only perceived to be for white elitists who believe they have an understanding of art. I wanted to take an art history class but most of them are about European Art and Eurocentric art standards. I was over the limited subjects that the school provided on that teaching of art and history. I am a Chicanx student and wanted to learn about People of Color history through a perspective. The mass society and classes in this school do not speak the stories of people of color and how art is used in marginalized communities. That is why I choose to take this class to focus on Chicanxs, and Mujeres art and their struggles to showcase their art to the world.
I love the structure of the class on how the professor Alma Lopex cares about the student’s creativity and being taught about Chicanx Mujeres artist that are not well represented. What surprised me about this class is how its hands on that gave students permission to create art. We had a sketchbook that we can freely express ourselves in a creative matter and practice techniques used by artists. There was not the right way to do art which is true and I stand for it. Students were able to express themselves and not fear standards or rules put on them while drawing.
I appreciate the Chicana artist that we learned every week and the chance for students to research a Chicanx artist for the class. The majority of the Chicanx artists showcase in class; I never knew of their work. I can say now that I have more knowledge of Chicana art and its narration. I have learned different art styles and the impact it has on the Latinx community and progress. Art was used as a political statement, an act of resistance for the mass society. I appreciated the subject and the different academia that I have not experienced. It was a great learning experience to know more about my community and my Chicanx identity.
