Week 9 Post

The artist that really stood out to me last week was Yreina Cervantez, especially her mural La Ofrenda.  I enjoyed this mural so much because of the contribution to Dolores Huerta and her work with the United Farm Workers movement. Being from the Central Valley and having worked in the fields myself I really appreciate those who were strong enough to fight for the field worker's rights and those who give these powerful members of the union the recognition they deserve. I'm not sure if it's because of the position that the image was taken, but Dolores Huerta seems to be the largest aspect of the mural. Dolores Huerta had such a large contribution in the United Farm Workers movement, she realized how important the movement was and didn't let machismo leadership interfere with her power, although there were many times when others weren’t allowing her to take her place. She would be away from her family for long periods of time because of her position in the movement, and that is very nontraditional for a hispanic female/mother. She even received a lot of backlash for it because society was targeting her for not sticking to “her role as a women/mother” but she didn’t let that bother her and she knew what she was doing in the movement was more important than other people’s opinions on her. There’s also an image of a fieldworker who is pulling crops out of the ground and encouraging it’s growth. The mural's bright colors show strength and long lasting power and there are many aspects of it that I can relate to because of my cultural background like the candles that may represent religion and faith.
