Tinoco, Kristina

Hi Everyone! My name is Kristina and I am a first year transfer studying political science with plans to study law in the future. I was born and raised in SoCal, the city of Westminster to be exact, in case anyone here is my neighbor. Unfortunately, I've only been to the UCLA campus a few times due to the coronavirus but I am also grateful for having been able to spend the time I have with my family during these times. In particular, my four year old nephew who proudly says his Tia is his best friend. One of my personal goals at this particular moment in time is try to create as much as I consume. My own creative outlet is making clothes. Sometimes this looks like me pulling out paper and pencils and drafting out patterns. And sometimes I am finding unused fabrics or clothing items and creating it into something to wear. It's been a stressful year and I ended up prioritizing making some money the past few months, over sewing and focusing on my studies. I have taken some art history classes in the past, but I cannot say that one has been similar to this one. My interest in Art History stems from the pleasure I get from learning about history and I have admittedly avoided taking a class on contemporary art likely because I am afraid that I might not be able to understand it. I think that is going to change with this class because I can connect with cultural values similar to my own. The last art history class I took focused on Indigenous art from South America so I am excited to see symbols in the Chicanx art we look at. I am also excited to be inspired by the way Chicanos have used art to inform.
