Hi everyone, my name is Adrianna Villela and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a Chicanx Studies major and am looking to minor in Anthropology as well. I became inspired to major in Chicanx studies in my first quarter here at UCLA when I took Chicano 10B with Professor Johnson. I was originally a PoliSci major, but I found that Chicanx studies intrigued me and would be able to cater more towards the work I want to do when I graduate. I am majoring in Chicanx studies to learn about the conditions Latinos face especially in education. I want to work for a non profit that helps students from underprivileged areas have access to higher education and resources to help them while in school. I am also very interested in becoming a teacher when I graduate. I helped TA for elementary students before COVID which is something I also felt very passionate about. Overall, I feel that mentoring and counseling underprivileged students is something that inspires me because I am giving back which is what other teachers and mentors gave to me when I did not have access.
I’m hoping this course expands and goes more into depth from what I have learned in the Introduction course of Chicanx studies. In Chicano 10A I learned about the Chicano Art Movement, but in this course I want to dive deeper into specific artists and the specific roles they played during the movement. I also want to examine more artwork and be exposed to artwork that made huge strides during the movement. I want to learn something new and walk away from the course knowing more about Artivism.
My favorite part of the reading for this week was when Ramos mentioned how artists would use anything they had at hand to create. I felt that this example demonstrates the urgency of the movement, and how no matter what they used to create their works of art, they created buzz with their creativity and boldness. The reading demonstrated the effectiveness of a group of people who were not seen as powerful nor a threat which proved many wrong.
