Week 4: Denver Art Museum (Snow, Kendall)

The Denver Art Museum discussion panel took place on zoom last Tuesday evening. During the discussion panel, Chicana/X artists were able to show off their art in a slide show and discuss who they were and what their art was about. At the end of their slideshows, they were also able to discuss with each other their thoughts and opinions. I thought that this was a cool experience for those who were listening because we got to learn a lot from them and experience something over zoom that we might not have gotten to do in person. It was also cool to hear directly from the artists what their art is instead of reading about them on our own.

The three artists who spoke during the panel were Alma Lopez, Pablo Helguera, and Damian Ortega. Alma Lopez, who is our Professor, discussed how she identifies as a Chicanx, Queer artists and how her art work reflects that. My favorite art that she showed were the ones that looked similar to the Virgin of Guadalupe because I liked all of the bright colors used in it. Another artist who talked was Pablo Helgera who talked about public art. He talked about public art through the impact of Latin Television. He also talked about how someone can have many identities as he talked about. He felt as if society needed to box him in as white or Mexican. The last artist who spoke at the panel was Damian Ortega. One of the art pieces that he showed us was called “Controller of the Universe” This piece was of different hatches and tools floating or hanging in the air. Ortega hoped that people would interpret this piece as something that can use us to take action or help us survive.
