Week 4: Denver Art Museum

I really appreciated the webinar that the Denver art Museum put together. It exposed me to the different artists with backgrounds and concentration in their respective fields. It made me realize that Mexico City and Mexico as a whole is such a rich hub for artists.  It also reinforced the belief that I had regarding the role of art as a political tool.

The first artist presented was Pablo Helguera, born in Mexico City and is currently living in New York. At first glance, his art may be simple, but the message behind it carries a lot of meaning. His work varies from history, pedagogy, sociolinguistics, ethnography, memory and the absurd.

The second artist that present was Damian Ortega. He is also born in Mexico City. His work is very politically loaded, as he began his career as a political cartoonist. His most recent work displayed a dissected beetle car. He submitted that this work has many layers. To me this displays different parts of a whole. The whole is a society in Mexico, and the different parts representing the intricate individuals who make up society's working class.

Lastly, the last artist the presented was Alma Lopez. A Chicana Feminist artist who is currently a professor at UCLA. She recalls her first memory when she visited the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico's Chapultepec. Here she encountered the painting of Las dos Friday. She describes this painting as the first exposure to art that breaks traditional norms in Mexican Culture.
