(week 4) Printing the Revolution Preview!

The Printing the Revolution Preview opened up with Carmen Ramos giving an introduction of the book and thanking the donors who helped make things possible. Then introducing three contributing artists, Juan Fuentes, Ether Hernandez, and Zeke Peña. During the Printing the revolution exhibition preview, I was most astounded by Esther because of her connections with the chicanx movement. She is now 76 and still someone who is active in the activism movement, and she is knowledgable about all topics not just the chicanx movement but as well as global warming, climate change, anti-blackness, and issues with our presidency. Like she said in the interview, when people asked her how she ended up making such a difference in her community through her art, she said because "she was born into it". As a child her parents were close to the grape strike and the UFW so her pursuing a career that supported what her parents and community stood up for was fate. She learned very early on that art had been used as a tool for social change. Which changed the way she viewed art and world altogether. She attended UC Berkeley where she learned new aspects of art such as censorship while moving along with the movimiento. One of my favorite artworks from her is the sun-raid raisins copy. It is a very popular piece because I have seen that art in many of my classes. It is to me a genius way to get attention of mostly the consumers of this brand and product. Since the colors, patterns, and figures are so similar it captures the attention of the eye because we are so familiar with what it is however it makes us glance or take a second look because it still looks different. Which is when you realize that the sun worker is actually a corpse making you inspect the rest of the art out of curiosity.
