Growing up, I have not had much experience with the Virgin of Guadalupe, which I believe is because I did not grow up religious and going to church. The only experiences with the Virgin of Guadalupe I have had have been in my Spanish classes. The first experience I had with the shrine was in my Spanish class in middle school. We would always play bingo and that was on one of the bingo cards so we became really familiar with the image. I did not learn about the actual meaning of the shrine until I was in community college in my Spanish 1 class. The professor would teach us about important places and images within the Latino culture and the Virgin of Guadalupe.
When looking at the Virgin of Guadalupe, it makes many emotions and thoughts run through my mind. Just by looking, you can tell the importance of the shrine/image and how important it is to people. All of the colors used make it stand out in a positive way. I also think it is interesting how many artists have put their own spin on the Virgin of Guadalupe. For example, Alma Lopez caused controversy with her take on it which I thought was very cool because it is good to get people thinking and it is ok if not everyone agrees because everyone is not the same person. Although, I am not religious and do not have a deep connection to it, I still appreciate what it stands for.
This was another piece of the Virgin of Guadalupe that I really liked and it is called "Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Women Clothed with the Sun of Revelation, versus the Red Dragon". When looking at this, you can tell that the Virgin of Guadalupe, is good because of the angels behind her and the light shining out behind her. You can tell she is fighting evil because of the scary faces and how they are below her.
