Week 6 Rasquachismo

Going into this course, I have not heard the work Rasquchismo before, nor do I know how to pronounce it. While reading "Chicano and Chicana Art", Rasquchismo is never something that you are yourself, it is someone else with lower status. This person is being judged by an outsider who has good taste/judgement. By reading that, I can already tell that this is a term that one would not want to be called or identify with. Rasquhismo is an attitude or taste, which to me sounds like someone is being judged off who they are. Rasquchismo exists in Chicano communities and is something of an "insider private code". According to the text, is it "generally... an underdog perspective- a view from los de abajo, An attitude rooted in resourcefulness and adaptability yet mindful stance and style" (pg.85). It can also be a way that someone can act. In the United States and Mexico, they have "bad taste". In this kind of environment, this are always moments to falling apart, being that they are living day by day. Therefore, they must use there resources to make what they need. In terms of a Rasquchismo taste, bright colors, boldness, patterns and sparkles are used. Most people have likely experienced Raquichismo in their life time. After reading about Raquichismo, I now do not believe that the term is bad, I think that it is good because there is nothing wrong with having an underdog aesthetic.
