Week 8

In the PDF "Chicano Art: Looking Backwards" by Jennifer Gonzalez, Gonzalez discusses what Chicano artists next step is. In the beginning of the reading, a question is asked whether "at the cost of economic security" if Chicano artists should continue to make pieces that promote social change and community service that brought the Chicana Art Movement or if since "some of the barriers are cracking" if they should competitively enter the mainstream and in the process shed their cultural identity. This is a dilemma from Gonzalez point of view from the two groups/exhibitions Califas and Murals of Aztlan. The Califas exhibitions are more of a traditional one they do their art on silkscreens and posters and have a "crammed gallery format". On the other hand, the Murals of Aztlan took a different approach to mural painting and did their pieces on portable canvas's, where the public could see their work. But, things brings up a problem because it contradicts what a mural means because the mural is apart where it is and in this case the mural could move different places. But, this really is not a dilemma because the Mural of Aztlan should be appreciated for their contemporary art and trying to do things in a different way. In my opinion, it is equally import for Chicano artists to focus on their culture, but also go into mainstream art. Since they are the artist, it should be up to them to chose what they want to do and should be applauded for it either way.
