There is a lot to reflect on this quarter, and I am glad that I got to share a space with so many artists for the second time. I have previously taken a class with professor Lopez and I enjoy learning about so many new artists each time. I learned about many but the best part was that each student got to bring with them their own artists to share. I also love the idea of the wikipedias, it gives upcoming artist a chance to get more publicity and attention which can offer them opportunity. It also is another reason for the artists to continue making art and a reason for them to continue. Besides enjoying the upcoming artists I really enjoyed learning about rasquachismo. The chicano theory which can be defined in many ways which is a reason for my love of the word/theory. In a critical anthology of chicana art Tomas Frausto explains how rsquachismo is neither an idea nor a style but more of an attitude or a taste. Rasquachismo is an underdog perspective and an attitude rooted in resourcefulness and adaptability yet mindful of stance in style. In my theater class we also talked about rasquachismo and how it connected to the chicano theater style. It is the use of resourcess with a low budget or pretty much creating with what you got. I think a synonym for rasquachismo at times could be improv. And I learned how I use rasquahismo in my everyday life, making the best of what I got. Finally I am glad that we got to learn about graffiti in Graffiti is Art by Charles Bojorquez otherwise known as 'Chaz". I would have not expected that but enjoyed it because I have always enjoyed graffiti and myself have thought of it as art. I wish it wasn't tied to criminality and gangs because it is beautiful and catches the eye. I feel like graffiti in itself is a form of rasquachismo as well. You can see how most people involved in graffiti come from low income communities and thats because we choose to make art with what we got. We don't have the popularity and privilege to have an exhibit or a large canvas to draw on so we share the art through graffiti using the cities we live in. Below is a picture of Chaz himself in back of some graffiti.
