The Artist I want to present on is Glenda Hernandez.
She is a multidisciplinary artist but focuses more on painting. I met her while studding at PCC. I chose her because she’s a hardworking female artist. She migrated from Mexico when she was very young and has had to endure much in order to achieve her goals. I find interesting the fact that her work explores her migratory story and status as a way to cope with life. I had the honor to the small gallery where she presented her first solo show. I found her work to very interesting and the way it was presented provided the viewer with an immersive experience.
One of the main themes in her work is the border and specifically the mountains that cross from Mexico to California. This makes me think about the fact that borders are social, almost imaginary, constructs but affect the lives of many. This is also reflected in the work of Glenda, the emotional toll these borders have taken on her life and that of her family. In the conversations I’ve had with her and also the reflected in her work is her family in terms of genetics. She explores the physical differences among her and her siblings. She does this by painting them all together in unison with landscapes of the border.
