Week 9 Chicana Futurism

After reading "Deus ex Machina," I can conclude that Ramirez argues that Chicana futurism is an art movement that seeks to place Latinx (referred to as Hispanos in the text) peoples in conversation with new-age technology. In doing so, Chicana Futurism artists are rewriting the stereotype that our culture and its people live in the "Land of Enchantment" and remain in the past. Such narratives are harmful to our communities, for example, deeming Latinx peoples as technologically illiterate and capable only of "unskilled" labor. Another example I often encounter is Americans thinking Mexico is not a developed country and is still made of pueblos. When in fact if you visit places like Mexico City, there is so much development and infrastructure, it would be ludicrous to think Mexicans are still living in a "Land of Enchantment."  I would like to focus on two images I found on google which I think also embody Chicana futurism.

The first image depicts Chicana futurism because the subjects are taking care of the land and using new-age technology such as renewable energy to sustain themselves. The artist is both critiquing the technological industries that still rely on fossil fuels, and placing Chicanx as more technologically advanced in comparison.  The second image portrays Chicana futurism because the old lives with the new. In the back of the painting, there is a pyramid but towards the front, it looks like a developed city with bustling business behind the three Latinas. As they pose, I can't help but think these women are on vacation, which means they have the financial means to travel and enjoy life. The sky also looks like a circuit board or a grid of some sort, maybe they're on another planet. The possibilities are endless and the sci-fi and fantasy aspects of both paintings further portray Chicana futurism.

  1. Hey Jackie! I loved the examples of Chicana Futurism that you gave. I liked how you made the point about how Chicana Futurism is already going on around us. I also appreciated how you tied Chicana Futurism to labor.
