Catherine S. Ramirez talks about Chicanafuturism in Deus Ex Machina: Traditions, Technology, and the Chicanafuturist Art of Marion C. Martinez. Upon further research, I realized Ramirez actually introduced the concept of Chicanafuturism herself in another article, not this one. Chicanafuturism is inspired by Afrofuturism and it describes art that displays cultural transformation influenced by new and everyday technologies. Chicanofuturism is significant because it acknowledges and counters the fact that science fiction and American society as a whole is permeated by white males. Another way to describe it is would be as art that speculates the future, but through the lens of a Chicana. This is significant because in mainstream images of the future, rarely non-white people are imagined. Looking at Ramirez's art before knowing about Chicanafuturism, I think I would have pointed out the possible rasquachismo which involves working with what is at hand since she incorporates scraps of technology.
