Alcala, Helena

Hello Everyone! My name is Helena Alcala and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a third-year design media arts major and hopefully an entrepreneurship minor. I generally focus on graphic design, such as layout design and I am exploring more typography-based design as well as illustration. For as long as I remember I have always had an interest in art and just creating things. The idea of creating something essentially out of nothing was so fascinating to me and I have always thought that everything has a purpose, if not in its original form than in another.

I took my first course in the Chicana/o and Central American Studies department in the 2021 winter quarter. We studied the origin and evolution of ritual traditions in Mexico as well as many countries throughout Central America. The holidays focused on were Day of the Dead, Easter, and Christmas and how they started with their original mythology then transformed into the well-known holidays we know today. Seeing all of the festivals with the different clothing styles, decorations and rituals was eye-opening to how different each holiday is in all of the different Central American countries considering that many of them came from similar mythological beliefs. I am looking forward to having a similar experience in this course as well. I do not know many Chicana/x artists so having the opportunity to discover new Hispanic artists and their overall process on how they create and what inspires them to create is great. Altogether, I am excited to see over this course the wide range of different Chicana/x artists and the different mediums that they use in order to create their unique pieces of art that contribute to the world of Chicana/x art.
