Higuera, Mara (Week Zero)

Hi
all! My name is Mara Higuera. My preferred pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a third year and double majoring in Chicanx Studies and Psychology. I am a first-generation college student who grew up in South Gate, which is in Southeast Los Angeles. I grew up in a family of 7 with 4 other siblings so I am used to being surrounded by people. I am also a bunny mom! I have two bunnies named Lolis and Lucy. I am currently studying Chicanx studies and psychology because I am interested in becoming a counselor for students in low-income POC communities. The lack of importance that is put on mental health in POC communities is one of the primary reasons for which I followed this route of study. By providing mental support for POC in low-income communities, we can help to minimize the negative stigma of mental health.

I am taking this class because I took Professor Lopez’s class Censored! Art on Trial and fell in love with her way of teaching. I have taken many Chicanx courses and they commonly all follow the same structure, but Lopez’s course brought a refreshing form of learning for me. I was exposed to content that I know I would not have known about otherwise. The neutral way in which the course was taught allowed me to gain my own opinion without feeling swayed to believe a certain way. Moreover, because of the subordination of POC female artists, this class is vital to bringing attention and importance to these artists. Few classes are offered at UCLA that focus on female power in the art industry. This course will help open doors to knowledge for me that other classes would not. I will be able to be in touch with my roots while fulfilling my major requirements.
