Moron Guzman, Ana

Hello everyone! My name is Ana Moron Guzman and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a third-year majoring in sociology. I come from a small town called Porterville, where there are a lot of Mexican American students living in a low-income community. In Porterville, they do not offer any Chicano/a/x classes near me. When I came to UCLA and found out they offered these classes, I immediately was interested. I took my first Chicanx class during the fall quarter of my first year and I found it very interesting. Hence, I decided to take more. I have taken four Chicanx/Central American studies, thus far and have enjoyed all of them. I am hoping to minor in Chicano/a/x and Central American studies which is how I found this class. I enjoy looking at art, especially from Chicano/a/x artists. Finding the meaning behind a piece of art is interesting and allows me to see the art through a deeper lens. One of my favorite types of art are murals. This class caught my eye because I want to learn about the different types of arts and artists.

In the reading “Conditions for Producing Chicana Art” by Sybil Venegas, I have personally viewed some of the expectations of women that are mentioned. I have seen that many people strongly believe that Mexican women have to be an ideal way because of the expectations due to the culture. For example, many believe women were born to be mothers. However, it has changed a lot because of art and activism. Chicana artists have played an important role in changing norms of the perceptions Chicano culture holds. I have experienced that more Mexican American people have been accepting of different ideas than the ones they grew up learning in their culture. There is significant progress of change in the culture and in the future, a lot more people will be open to new ideas.
