Hello! My name is Emily Orozco and my preferred pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a fourth year Biology major born and raised in the Coachella Valley. I am an only child to two Guatemalan parents. First generation on my dad's side and second generation on my mother's side. I have an interest in health care because of my aunt who became a nurse practitioner and I hope to become a Physician's Assistant, physical therapist, or a medical doctor.
Growing up, I was always surrounded by individuals that have similar backgrounds to myself and it was not till I got to UCLA that I realized how different the world around me could be. I found myself looking for folks that had similar interests to me such as music taste or similar family dynamics. This is part of the reason I joined a Latina sorority (Lambda Theta Nu).
I've had an interest in Chicanx courses ever since I first arrived at UCLA. I had no idea that there could be classes dedicated to art or culture especially Chicanx/Latinx culture. I chose this class because I have always been more of an artistic person rather than an athletic one and I've always been drawn to artistic outlets. As a child I loved to paint and I would paint with my grandmother. So I guess I have very little knowledge on what a "real" Chicanx artist is but I am very excited to learn about them!
