Mari Hernandez (1984–present day) is a photographer known for her self-portraits that reflect Chicana cultural identity.

 

Biography (or Early Life and Education)

Mari Hernandez was born in San Antonio Texas and pursued a Bachelor’s degree in English at University of Texas at San Antonio.

She won the Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant in 2017 and the National Association of Latino Arts and Fund for the Arts Grant.

Mari Hernandez is the co-founder of the Chicana art collective, Mas Rudas (2009 to 2015). Mas Rudas is a group of four Chicana artists, Mari Hernandez herself, Ruth Leonela Buentello, Sarah Castillo, and Kristin Gamez. They aim to represent their lived experiences as Chicana women through art, photography and featured installations.
