Although I am white, Italian American, I grew up catholic and was surrounded Mexican culture. I was baptized in the Mission San Juan Basilica, and would go to church service there almost every Sunday with my dad. I also had and still do have a lot of Chicanx, and Hispanic friends growing up near San Juan Capistrano. With that being said I am very familiar with the image of Virgen de Guadalupe. When I was little my family visited Guadalajara in Mexico. Guadalupe imagery was literally everywhere. She is such an important figure, especially in Mexico and to Hispanic people. She is basically a different version of the Virgin Mary. I remember her being in the San Juan Basilica as well. She is on the main gold leaf shrine, where the sermons are given, as well as in a shrine in the back of the church. But, the first thing that comes to my mind is the jewelry she is on, especially the necklace of my childhood friend, Tiffany. I have attached a picture of my Tiffany's necklace, as well as the San Juan Basilica images.
