Zill, Madison

Hello everyone! My name is Madison Zill (she/her/hers) and I am a 4th year World Arts & Cultures and Communication double major. As a World Arts & Cultures major, I have written many papers about the relationship between Jewish identity, antisemitism, and assimilation. I used many opportunities to write about my personal identity throughout my time here at UCLA. I have gained a greater understanding about myself and what my Judaism means to me by being able to analyze Jewish art and scholarly texts. I am enrolled in this class to explore another identity because I know how important it is to be able to access scholarly information about one’s identity. I want to be part of giving credit and recognition to Chicana/x artists to inspire those with similar identities.

I was particularly inspired to take this class because I was able to visit Mexico this summer and I fell in love with the culture, people, and art. I loved the intricate bead work on statues of glass animals, paintings made from coffee, and the prideful nationalistic messages from the work. From the bright colors to the beautiful designs, the art aesthetically impressed me. However, recognizing my identity as a visitor rather than a local, I do not feel completely informed of the meaning behind the colors, designs, and artists.

Furthermore, after reading the article entitled “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” by Linda Nochlin, I am interested in learning more about the intersectionality of the Chicana/x identity and being a woman and how this interplay influences the art. Though I cannot comment on this relationship on a personal level, I want to use this class as an opportunity to listen and absorb as much as I can about a new culture and identity.
