Alcala, Helena (week 9: presentations)

An artist that I enjoyed hearing about and getting an in-depth description of some of their art was Sand One. I remember seeing many of One’s doll murals around Los Angeles a long time ago so it was interesting to revisit those memories and associate a face to the art as well learn more about the One's life. One’s murals are one of a kind featuring different only woman dolls all with large eyes and long thick eyelashes, the overall universal look of the dolls was inspired by always seeing her mother's eyelashes with mascara. Most of her pieces are spray-painted on walls or any large outdoor surface and she also has smaller prints on canvas. I think her background makes her murals even more impactful because while the images are very beautiful and striking, learning the meaning behind them makes them even more meaningful to people. Her entire life One worked hard for what she has achieved and never gave up on her dream no matter how hard things got for her, if anything perhaps the struggles she faced made her the person she is not today. Once I saw her murals in the class presentation I wanted to see more of her art. After visiting her website I realized how many different projects One has accomplished throughout her career. Not only has she created such a unique character style with her dolls but she has really created an entire brand if not a company for herself. Her dolls are on bags, cups, blankets, etc. and it is clear how accomplished she is. One doll I found that was very interesting to me was Sand for Coca Cola. This mural shows a doll with very long flower petal eyelashes wearing a flower shirt and drinking a coca-cola with a red background. It has a somewhat different feel than the rest of her pieces, mainly because of the eyelashes but that is what made the piece really stand out to me.
