Hovhannisyan, Gagik (Week 10)

Hey guys!  First of all I would like to share with you about my positive thoughts and experiences that I had in this class.  I had a wonderful time getting to learn about Chicana Art and Chicano movements.  As I said before I was not so familiar with it and didn't even know what Chicano was referring to.  I am really happy that I spent the past two months with you guys studying Chicana Art.

One of the many wonderful Chicana artists that I learned about is Yolanda M. Lopez.  Yolanda Lopez was born and raised in the United States to an immigrant family from Mexico.  She was born on November 1, 1942 in San Diego and sadly passed away this year on September 3rd in San Francisco.  She would remain in the hearts of all Chicanos because of the work she has done for the community.

Through her art she raised voice and concern for all the Latinos living in the states.  Some of her most significant art pieces are “Women’s Work is Never Done” series(1997), "Your Vote Has Power" and my most favorite one of all, “Who is the Illegal Alien, Pilgrim?”. By the titles of the arts you can already tell what they are about and how much she was concerned about her community. She encouraged her people to always voice their concerns and fight for their basic rights.

Yolanda M. Lopez was not only an artist but she was also a Chicana activist, feminist, and civil rights rights activist.  I think that she was more of an activist than an artist because she used her talent to support her beliefs and help others. As I mentioned before her work would be remembered for decades and I am really happy that I learned about her in this class.

Thank you everybody, I wish y'all all the best!
