Meza-Rendon, Silvia (Week 8)

This weeks presentation focused on public art and I was very impressed to see everyone's knowledge on their wikipedia artist. The artist that stood out to me the most was, Brenda Barrios presented by Armando Perez. Brenda Barrios is a UCLA Art Student, although she began her career as Fashion she still manages to incorporate it into her art. In 2018 she was hospitalized and came to the realization that she wanted to continue doing art in higher education. A lot of her following on social media came from doing a live mural on TV of a cartoon Frida Kahlo taking a selfie. Brenda uses her art to bring awareness to issues in the community such as immigration, disabilities and health. After learning about her I decided to do more research on her art. One of my favorites was the image below. During the pandemic, there was a lot going on throughout the world and I think this image captures the chaos but at the same time its normality. On the right side of the image you can see people dinning outside while others protest. She is also encouraging people to go vote all in the middle of a fire. Her art is creating awareness to many issues as she actively shows the reality of the scenes. Its also nice to see colors of the people that represent our community.
