This week, I got to see many other oF my peers present about so many great artists. One in particular that stood out to me was about artist Sand One presented by Mara Higuera. Sand One’s art style stands out to me because it reminds me of The Bratz dolls. She expresses her dolls with hyper femininity, emphasis on curves and petite figures, and big eyes and makeup. It shocks me to hear that some people do not call this true art. What makes it true art is not only her style, but the way she draws these dolls to send a message. One particular artwork by One was Sanchez in her ScorpionUniform. What this piece means to me is that one can have a dangerous job meant for men but still keep their femininity and stay true to themselves. I realized that One’s work is a form of taking back power and identity.
One’s style of drawing remind me of The Bratz dolls and my close relationship I have with them. When I was younger, I would always look at their body shape and face. I would always want a skinny waist like them, smaller feet and arms, and big eyes. Now that I am older, I feel like those things aren’t needed but I can see how feminine features can be used to label women as weak. I enjoyed looking at this presentation and would love to look more at Sand One’s work in the future.
