Zill, Madison Sand One presented by Mara Higuera (Week 9)

An artist that I enjoyed learning about was Sand One presented by Mara Higuera. Sand One is a Mexican and Guatemalan artist that is known for her cartoon dolls with accentuated eyelashes and figure. Sand One works with watercolor and spray paint to create the dolls on canvases and walls. The inspiration for these dolls was her mother’s makeup. Sand One receives a lot of negativity because she is not a formally educated as an artist. She is self-taught. Though she does not have formal education, she creates art that is able to speak to women who have been through a lot.

The doll that stood out to me the most is named “Cakes.” “Cakes” is a doll that represents women who have “Daddy issues.” To portray men, Sand One draws teddy bears. In “Cakes,” Sand One represents the man as a blue teddy bear to emphasize that “boys are toys.” The woman in “Cakes” is in a bikini- like outfit. The revealing clothing coupled with the portrayal of the man as a toy emphasizes the message that women are in control of their sexuality and can choose what they want to do with their bodies. As a woman, I think this message is inspiring and allowed me to connect with Sand One even more.

Sand One stood out to me the most because her art reminded me of the children’s doll “Bratz.” When I was younger, I used to play with Bratz dolls on a regular basis. I remember that some of my friends could not play with me because their moms thought that the dolls were dressed too inappropriately. Each Bratz doll had an outfit that truly expressed who she was. I am thankful that my mom allowed me to play with dolls that emphasized self-expression and comfortability in their own bodies.
