The
Cross
Last
week’s blog post challenged me to think about icons I grew up with. I
considered decorations my mom fills the house with, icons I encountered on
Sundays at church, and icons I saw in entertainment. The icon we discussed in
class was related to religion, so I immediately thought of icons in my
religion. The first image that came to mind was the cross. In my tradition as a
protestant, I typically do not see Jesus on the cross as he is represented in
Catholic tradition. Thus, for me, the cross as the key icon. I considered all
the places I see the cross; on necklaces, in church, as tattoos, as
decorations, carved into hills, and lit up outside churches. It signifies Jesus
Christ’s sacrifice for our sins. Sacrifice is a major theme throughout the
Christian faith, and for Protestants, the cross is empty because Jesus not only
died, but he rose from the grave.
I
have chosen the cross as my cover art because it represents me as an imperfect
person. When I think of the cross and all it symbolizes, I see hope and new
life. I have confidence in the cross because of the promise Jesus has made to
his followers. Although the cross holds many meanings, I see my sin and myself
forgiven and set free to live a new life with God’s power. So, with the the
cross on the front of my journal, I have confidence to continue living out the
new life Jesus has given me.
