Week 9: Chicana Printmakers

Barnet Sanchez writes on how Chicana printmakers created some amazing work with strong visuals that helped create and shaped the Chicano/a identity during the period of the Chicano/a civil rights movement, but failed to achieve any real credibility and create a huge impact in the art world. Although the artwork of these artists, in which she writes on should have received nothing less than apprised. Barnet Sanchez states that these artists “for more than two decades have mapped out new territory for the understanding of art, politics, gender relations” through their artworks. These artists have significantly contributed in the formation and creation of multiply identities for chicano’s and Chicana’s and to overlook these artist because of their medium is unjust.
With my newfound knowledge on printmaking and how much time, effort and the planning involved in the placement of the colors being used in the art piece to achieve the correct color that the artist intends is quite amazing. This amazement continues further when I begin to look at the work of Diane Gamboa and her little gold man piece. I am quickly reminded of Saul Quintero presentation on her art work, but in particular the little gold man piece and how she used more than 10 colors to make all the different variety of colors in this piece and how she managed to achieve the color scheme and final results is quite impressive. But I guess it true what they say, that she is master on printmaking.
