Blog 4: Laura Alvarez

Double Agent Sirvienta is very interesting to me in that the artist Laura Alvarez depicted the her mother as the main model for the character of the maid in this work. “Double Agent Sirvienta” is a series of works featured around the main character who is a maid.

The piece I found most interesting was “At the Park”.This piece featured Laura’s mom as a maid in which she is walking around a park carrying a rocket with a baby in between her back and the rocket. Double Agent Sirvienta stands proudly tall while looking over her shoulder and her eyes have an intense glare as if she were looking at the viewer I really like it because the character is taking on a strong and empowering persona. She is a maid, however, she is also an undercover secret agent and looks as if she is ready to take on her next task.

This piece also has minimal amounts of writing. The baby being carried indicates that oftentimes a child who is under a maid’s care is exposed more to the maid and may grow a deeper and personal connection to the maid than to it’s parents. In Double Agent’s arm sleeve a crown shaped image is visible indicating the artists view of her mother. The mother was the artists strongest female role model and the characters development was the artists way of depicting her mother with respect and honor. It also told the viewer of this piece (and the series of this agent) that women are not simply domestic workers but they can be strong and powerful and yet still be at the head of the family.
