My name is Azadeh Hanukaai. I know it is a little hard to pronounce, especially if you are not Persian, so I go by the nickname Azi (Ah-ZEE). I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, specifically in the city Woodland Hills, which is about 15 miles North/West of the UCLA campus. I am a junior transfer student from Los Angeles Pierce College, and I major in psychology with hopes of adding a Spanish minor. With my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology, I plan on completing graduate school, with the hopes of becoming a counselor for boys and girls with eating disorders and body image issues.
Throughout high school, I developed a love for the Spanish language and culture. One day, I hope to be fluent in Spanish, travel to a Spanish speaking country, and solely speak Spanish to the natives. Even though I studied Spanish for a total of four years, it is still difficult to understand at times, but I will eventually get there. My love for Spanish was a contributing factor of enrolling in Chicana Art & Artists, because I want to further my knowledge of the Mexican culture. Also learning how to draw and paint from an actual artist is a pleasant perk too. I have not been exposed to Chicana art in the past, but I am delighted to say that, at the end of the quarter, I will have a better understanding.
Growing up, I was raised Jewish. So, I am embarrassed to say that before our first class meeting on Monday, I have never heard of the Virgin of Guadalupe. However, I am fascinated by the story behind her, and how great of an impact she has on the lives of many. I am sad to say that she doesn't have an impact on my culture, but I am glad that I was introduced to her message and the symbol she embodies. Growing up, I did not have any religious icon to idolize. Although I recognize as Jewish, my parents never forced me to believe in their beliefs.
