Sanchez, Ismael

My name is Ismael Sanchez, my major is Business Economics and this is my first year as a transfer student. I am from Mid-City Los Angeles. My parents are from a small and humble village in Oaxaca, Mexico named San Bartolome Quilana, my dad and mom both came to the United States illegally before I was born. I have a pretty big family, we total to 7 including myself. I have one younger brother who is 10 and 3 sisters of ages 14, 16, and 23.

I really enjoy drawing and art, so I decided to take this class. However I did not know that I was actually going to be drawing, I really didn't expect that. I am really excited because I am an artist and I haven't taken anything close to an art class that will require me to draw since my junior year of high school. I have been drawing for a very long time now, I primarily stick to lettering and Graffiti because that is my passion. I feel that this class will help me improve as an artist, I really feel that I will expand my horizons and also add more purpose and meaning to my art.

I did grow up with the Virgen of Guadalupe, her presence was always around in my home and the community. I didn't really look into her story or the religion she was apart of. My family was very religious growing up and they wanted to enforce that religion on me. I simply didn't listen, but I would still go to church and I also did my first communion. I would see her image everywhere,  including my uncle's back and the big blanket I once shared with my siblings. In my home today, if one walks in they are greeted with  an alter of the Virgen of Guadalupe, my phone case has the Virgen of Guadalupe. I see her as someone who is constantly protecting my family and I.
