Barbara Carrasco

I chose to do my blog post on Barbara Carrasco because I really found the image with the ball of string and bootie interesting. Looking at the image at first I was a bit confused to what the image was trying to convey. I figured that the image with the large lady trapped in the ball of string was the emulation of Chicana women and the history that they bring with them to their art. The string is attached to the needle and the needle is sewing a bootie. At the same time the string is entangled to the large lady who's mouth, breasts, and genitals are suppressed by the string. This goes to show that Chicana women are trapped in their own sexuality. They are being suppressed even though they are creating art. As the bootie gets created the ball of string gets smaller and smaller. As a result the large female eventually becomes free from the suppression she faces. To draw parallel, women all around the world face suppression from men, and Chicana female artists use art as a means to free themselves from the patriarchal, and colonial suppression.
