Carmen Lomas Garza

Garza’s future calling was to be an artist, from Texas to San Francisco. Although she didn't start out her career as an artist, she gained some experience and knowledge as an assistant for the Galeria de la Raza in San Francisco. Garza was able to gain a better understanding of the art world, as well as running an art gallery. Her first well-known work was curating the exhibition Homenaje a Frida Kahlo: Dia de los Muertos in 1978. It drew the attention of the community as her artistic talents were highlighted. In 1987, Garza used the inspiration of this exhibition to create the Day of the Dead/Offering to Frida Kahlo for the travelling exhibition called Hispanic Art in the United States. As her first travelling exhibition, she was able to observe a dynamic audience and their views on Latino artworks. I think this gave her a prelude to what she can expect as a Chicana artist.

As I read this section of Garza's life, it also gave me an idea of what to expect as a curator. It is important to gain an understanding of cultures as the people are becoming more global in their relationships.
