Week 7 Presentations

I really enjoyed Kenia Gutierrez and Bell Diaz’s photography.  I especially liked their stance on las desaparecidas de Juarez.  I don’t remember what the names of their pieces were and It was difficult finding their art online, but I remember there was a photograph that seemed like a self-portrait of Bell with blood on her hands.  I believe that was for the desaparecidas de Juarez series.  Her use of contrast was excellent, there was dark shadows, but wherever the light hit, it was hit with neon bright colors which made the image look like it was taken at a shady club.  It made the image seem suspenseful, and it conveyed the terrorous message of the tortured girls from Juarez.  Another art piece that I really liked was Milk the Pass by Barbara Carrasco.  This painting is a portrait of herself gasping for breath after dunking herself in a glass of milk in order to calm down after eating a spicy Jalapeno.  This painting refers to her having to prove herself as being Mexican since her appearance doesn’t conform to the stereotypical Mexican girl.  She dunks herself in the milk because milk is a common thing to drink after eating something that was too spicy to handle, the milk also refers to her light skin tone.  This painting shows that within the Chicano community there is discrimination amongst each other based on how “Mexican” they look.
