Week 9: Thanksgiving in the style of Carmen Lomas Garza

In my drawing, I wanted to show how my family's thanksgiving dinner looks like from above. Every year, my family all head over to my Tia's house for thanksgiving dinner. Everyone pitches in and makes a special dish, and usually the kitchen is off limits because everyone is finishing up cooking and putting the last touches on food. The men are usually outside hanging out, which is why I didn't put many of them in the drawing. In this picture, I mainly included the second generation which consists of the teenagers and children. They are all finicky and waiting for their parents to sit down so they can start eating. The table in the television room is where the kids sit, and the table on the wood is for the older kids and the adults. I remember being little and sitting at the kid's table and always wishing to be with the grownups. Now that I am older, it is interesting to be actually sitting with the older people and being able to listen to the conversations and stories they tell.
After drawing this picture, I realized how difficult it is to draw all the little details that exists in real life. For example, I am sure that there were some type of art on the walls that I cannot remember. I also had difficulty depicting how hectic this dinner really is. In actuality, everyone is talking really loud, singing, drinking, and just having a great time. I am not sure why, but for some reason I have drawn everyone looking very calm. I hope to get better at drawing and one day be able to draw my family as wild and as fun as they really are. In relating my narrative scene to that of Carmen Lomas Garza, I feel like her depictions of everyday life are somewhat similar to mine. For example, both pictures contain family interacting in a candid fashion. While Garza's picture showed a family making tamales, mine were hanging out eating a typical American meal.
