It’s really amazing to think about how much I have learned this quarter, and I appreciate the “before” and “after” tests we have been able to do, such as the hand drawings and the artist name quiz, that really prove this growth.
Although I disliked it at first, the hand drawings became my favorite part of the class. Looking back at my first drawings, it is truly amazing how much I have improved. I can only imagine how much better I would get if I kept going, which I truly hope to do. I feel like I gained access to a new side of self-expression through this class that I never would have had otherwise. I never thought of myself as an “artist” or a creative person. Those titles seemed far out of reach. Through this class, I have realized that - like all things in life - art is just about commitment and practice. For the first time in my life, I feel like if I worked hard, I could actually be an artist.
I also truly enjoyed reading about Yolanda Lopez and Carmen Lomas Garza. Before this class, I had no understanding of various symbolism or imagery that was prevalent in Chicana Art. These two books, as well as in-class lectures, made me think deeper about the power images have to reflect culture and stimulate change. I am truly grateful for this class, and I will really miss it!
