Presentation: Angélica Becerra

Angélica Becerra

One presentation that stuck out to me so far was the presentation on Angélica Becerra. As mentioned, Angélica is a Latina woman with a mission and a drive to succeed, and is also a PHD student at UCLA. Her story resonated with me as she was raised by her close family and with a paintbrush in her hand. Her message is clear and strong: women are powerful beings (goddesses as she calls them), people of color have a purpose, and culture is something that should be respected and celebrated not only within the POC community but outside communities as well.
One piece that was shown was a portrait of Angela Davis. This piece caught my eye not only because of the bright colors but also because of the beautiful technical skill that was used. The detail in the mouth and eyes is truly phenomenal and brings the portrait to life while also showing the great respect that the artist has for the subject. The quote that was chosen furthers Becerra’s heart of helping those in need. The tone of the portrait, while discussing heavy topics is also joyful and celebratory of culture and the differences that make everyone beautifully complex. Overall, I truly appresiciated the presentation because it introduced me a new artist who's work I enjoy.
